11/30/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL SIGNS ONE FOR 2010-11 SEASON
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western women’s volleyball coach Cory Frederick has announced the signing of one player to the NCAA National Letter’s of Intent. The Griffons will bring in Stephanie Hattey out of Kearney, Mo. for the 2010-2011 volleyball season.

11/18/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL PLAYER KELLI SICNER NAMED TO ALL-MIAA HONORABLE MENTION
Missouri Western State University outside hitter Kelli Sicner has been named to the 2009 All-MIAA Honorable Mention team.  Sicner is the only Griffon to be named to any of the MIAA teams this fall.  Kelli is also a repeat MIAA Honorable Mention recipient, as she was also the lone Griffon recipient of the 2008 season.

11/14/2009 - MWSU VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FOUR SETS IN FINAL REGULAR SEASON MATCH
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team fell in their final regular season match of the 2009 season by a score of 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 25-11 and 25-17) against the 19th ranked Bulldogs of Truman State. Western won the first set of the match but fell on Senior Day. Western honored two seniors before the match (Madison Benton and Allison Smith) as they played their last match in a Griffon uniform.

11/11/2009 - GRIFFONS SWEEP SEASON SERIES WITH BEARCATS, 3-2

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Five different Griffons had double digit kills or digs as the Western volleyball team swept the season series with the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats. Western came back twice getting the victory 3-2 (25-27, 25-19, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-6). The Griffons were led by Kelli Sicner as she had 17 kills and 14 digs helping the Griffons improve to 11-21 overall and 4-15 in the MIAA.

11/7/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-0 TO 6TH RANKED JENNIES - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team were looking for their second upset of a top-25 team in as many nights but came up short falling 3-0 (25-17, 25-17 and 25-19) to 6th ranked Central Missouri. Hannah Zimmerman led the charge for the Griffons with 10 kills on 20 attacks. Western falls to 10-21 overall and 3-15 in the MIAA.

11/6/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL UPSETS #20 NEBRASKA-OMAHA - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball came away with their biggest victory of the season defeating the 20th ranked Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks in five sets (28-30, 31-33, 30-28, 27-25 and 15-13). The Griffons fought back from two sets down with Meghan Voelz leading the way with a career high 23 kills. Western improves to 10-20 overall and 3-14 in the MIAA with three matches left in the season.

11/3/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL RETURNS HOME FOR FINAL STRETCH OF REGULAR SEASON - The Missouri Western volleyball team returns home this weekend as they prepare for the final stretch of the regular season.  Western will play host to MIAA Conference foes Nebraska Omaha and Central Missouri.  The Griffons (9-20, 2-14) are coming off their second MIAA Conference win with a 3-1 victory over Southwest Baptist last week.  This week, Western will look for their first ever victory against the Mavericks of UNO on Friday, November 7.  Then they will come back and look to upset league leading Central Missouri on Saturday, November 7.  Both games will be played in the MWSU Fieldhouse and are set to tip off at 7 p.m.

10/31/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-0 TO LIONS - JOPLIN, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team fell to the Missouri Southern Lions 3-0 (25-23, 25-19 and 25-22) in Joplin, Mo. Kelli Sicner and Meghan Voelz led the charge with 13 kills apiece as the Griffons fall to 9-20 overall and 2-14 in MIAA play.

10/30/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS SBU 3-1 IN BOLIVAR - BOLIVAR, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team won their second MIAA match of the season defeating the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 26-24 and 25-23) in Bolivar, Mo. The Griffons were led by Meghan Voelz as she had 16 kills and 16 defensive digs. Western improves to 9-19 overall and 2-13 in the MIAA.

10/28/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-1 TO #24 PITTSBURG STATE - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team played well but would fall in four sets to the 24th ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas (23-25, 26-24, 25-20 and 26-24). Meghan Voelz led the Griffons tying her career high of 22 kills. Western falls to 8-19 overall and 1-13 in the MIAA.

10/28/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL BACK IN ACTION THIS WEEK - The Missouri Western Volleyball team will be back in action this week as they play three MIAA conference matches.  Western will play host to the Gorillas of Pittsburg State on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 pm in Looney Arena.  Following that, the Griffons head on the road for Halloween weekend as they travel to Bolivar, Mo. on Friday, October 30 to take on the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.  Game time is set for 7 pm.  On Saturday, Western is again in action as they play a 2 pm afternoon game vs. Missouri Southern.  Western is looking to get revenge after losing to all three opponents at home earlier in the season.

10/24/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN THREE SETS TO NO. 9 WASHBURN - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team fell to the 9th ranked Washburn Lady Blues 3-0 (25-13, 25-20 and 25-18) in the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons fall to 8-18 overall and 1-12 in the MIAA as Madison Benton led the way with 19 set assists.

10/23/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS TO NO. 7 EMPORIA STATE, 3-0 - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – After nearly a month away from home the Griffons returned to the Fieldhouse to take on the 7th ranked Emporia State Hornets. Western would play hard but it would not be enough as they would fall in all three sets 25-19. The Griffons were led by Kelli Sicner and Hannah Zimmerman as they both had 10 kills apiece. Western falls to 8-17 overall and 1-11 in the MIAA.

10/23/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL VOLUNTEERED WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS YOUNG ATHLETE PROGRAM - The Missouri Western volleyball team went to the St. Joe YMCA this past Monday from 6:30-7:30 to work with the local Young Athletes Program. There were approximately 10-12 participants in the program all with special needs that range in age from 2-7 years old. Most traditional Special Olympics Events are designed for participants ages 8 and older. This program is designed for younger athletes to work with them on motor skills, teamwork, and other basic skills. The Griffons sat down and helped the athletes stretch, worked with them on jumping, helped them learn some volleyball skills by using balloons, played a little floor hockey to work on hand eye coordination, then finished the evening playing a game of softball. It was a great time and several of the players are planning to attend more upcoming sessions. Western players partnered up with an athlete for the session and helped them go through the activities for the evening.

10/21/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FIVE ON THE ROAD - HAYS, Kan. – For the second time this season the Griffons would lose a heartbreaker to the Fort Hays State Tigers by a score of 3-2 (17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-20 and 16-14) this time in Hays, Kan. The Griffons were led by Meghan Voelz as she had 19 kills and 17 digs as Western falls to 8-16 overall and 1-10 in the MIAA.

10/20/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES MIAA PLAY; RETURNS HOME THIS WEEKEND - After a mid-week road trip on Wednesday, October 21 to Hays, Kan. to take on the Fort Hays State Tigers, the Missouri Western Volleyball team will return home this weekend to face MIAA Conference foes Emporia State and Washburn. Western picked up their first conference win last week as they defeated Northwest Missouri State 3-2 up in Maryville. The Griffons are looking for their first win against these three rivals this season, and will look to pull upsets on the top teams in the conference. The Emporia State match on Friday, October 23 is set for 7:00 p.m. and is Pink-Out 2009.  Free t-shirts will be given out to the first 200 in attendance, and pink ribbons will be sold for $1 apiece in support of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research. On Saturday, October 24, the Griffons are again at home and will take on the Washburn Lady Blues. Match time is also set for 7:00 p.m.

10/17/2009 - VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-1 TO TRUMAN STATE - KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffons volleyball team falls 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-15) to the Truman State Bulldogs. Western was led by Meghan Voelz as she had 13 kills while Kelli Sicner had 10. Madison Benton had 40 set assists while Benton and Britny Pearl each had 16 digs. Megan Sharpe led the Bulldogs with 13 kills while Ashley Petak had 24 set assists. Western falls to 8-15 overall and 1-9 in the MIAA while the Bulldogs improve to 18-8 and 6-4 in the MIAA. Western will be in action next on Friday, October 23 when they take on the Emporia State Hornets at 7:00 pm from the MWSU Fieldhouse.


10/14/2009 - SICNER, VOELZ AND BENTON LEAD GRIFFONS TO FIRST MIAA VICTORY - MARYVILLE, Mo. – Missouri Western duo of Kelli Sicner and Meghan Voelz each had career highs of 22 kills helping the Griffons come back from 2-1 down to defeat the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 25-15 and 15-12). Madison Benton also had a career night as she had a career high of 60 set assists. The victory marked the first MIAA victory of the season for the Griffons and the first victory over the Bearcats since October 27, 2006 when Western won 3-2 in St. Joseph, Mo. Western snapped an eleven match losing streak improving to 8-14 overall and 1-8 in the MIAA.

10/12/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL GOES ON THE ROAD FOR MORE MIAA ACTION -

The Missouri Western Volleyball team will again travel on the road as they search for their first MIAA Conference victory of the year.  On Wednesday, October 14, the Griffons will head to Maryville, Mo. to take on rival Northwest Missouri State, who is 1-6 in the MIAA and 10-13 overall.  On the Homecoming weekend, Western will again be on the road as they travel to Kirksville to take on the Truman State Bulldogs (4-4 MIAA and 16-8 overall).  Both games are set for first serve at 7:00 pm.

10/10/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-0 TO CENTRAL MISSOURI - WARRENSBURG, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball team continued in their hitting struggles as they traveled to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on the Central Missouri Jennies.  The Griffons had a negative hitting percentage for the second straight game, hitting -.018 (25 kills, 27 errors).  The Jennies hit .333 through the game and won in three sets, 25-12, 25-18, 25-13. The victory for the Jennies moves them to 22-3 overall and 9-3 in the MIAA as Western falls to 7-14 overall and 0-8 in the MIAA.

10/9/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN OMAHA, NEB. 3-0 TO MAVERICKS - OMAHA, Neb. – Western volleyball struggled hitting the ball as they hit a season low of -.010 (26 K, 27 E, 103 TA) in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16 and 25-17) loss to 15th ranked University of Nebraska-Omaha. The Griffons were led by Alex Behnke as she had seven kills. The Griffons fall to 7-13 overall and 0-7 in MIAA play.

10/6/2009 - WESTERN FALLS IN THREE SETS TO ROCKHURST - KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western volleyball struggles continue as they fell in three sets to the Rockhurst University Hawks by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-10. Western sits at 7-12 overall as they head back into MIAA play on Friday, October 9 when they travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.

10/5/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL RETURNS TO THE COURT ON THE ROAD THIS WEEK - After a short week away from competition, the Missouri Western Volleyball team will be back in action this week as they face non-conference opponent Rockhurst University and MIAA leaders Nebraska-Omaha and Central Missouri.  The Griffons will travel to Kansas City, Missouri to take on the Hawks of Rockhurst on Tuesday, October 6 with a tip time of 7:00 p.m.  The weekend will prove to be tough as the Griffons travel to University of Nebraska-Omaha (Omaha, Neb.) on Friday for a 7:00 p.m. start and then to Warrensburg, Missouri to face the Jennies on Saturday, October 10 at 6:30 p.m.

9/26/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL FALLS IN FIVE SETS TO LIONS - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons fall to 7-11 overall and 0-6 in the MIAA as they fell in five sets to the Missouri Southern Lions, 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 15-6). Western took the first two sets of the match, but could not finish off the Lions falling in the final three sets. The Lions improve to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in MIAA play.

9/25/2009 - WESTERN FALLS 3-1 TO SOUTHWEST BAPTIST - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Western lost their seventh match in a row falling to the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 3-1 (25-20, 25-20, 15-25 and 25-19) in MIAA play. Western was led by Kelli Sicner with 15 kills hitting .346 in the match. Western falls to 7-10 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA.

This marked the third match in a row that the Griffons fell to a ranked opponent. Meghan Voelz led the Griffons with 15 kills while Kelli Sicner added 11. Western falls to 7-9 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA.

9/22/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL IN ACTION AT HOME THIS WEEKEND - After traveling to Pittsburg, Kansas, on September23, the Missouri Western Volleyball team will return home at the end of the week for weekend matches against Southwest Baptist and Missouri Southern.  In Pittsburg, the Griffons take on the 10-4 Gorillas at 7 p.m.  On Friday, September 24 at 7 p.m. the Griffons return home to face Southwest Baptist in Looney Arena.  Saturday's contest vs. Missouri Southern, at 2 p.m., will also be in Looney Arena.

9/18/2009 - WESTERN FALLS 3-1 TO #3 HORNETS - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons volleyball team fell in four sets to the third ranked Emporia State Hornets in Emporia, Kan. After getting down two sets to none the Griffons battled back to win the third set, but it would not be enough falling (25-16, 25-14, 13-25 and 25-14). With the loss, the Griffons fall to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.

9/16/2009 - GRIFFONS FALL IN MIAA OPENER 3-2 TO TIGERS - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons volleyball team fell in their first home and MIAA match of the season to the Fort Hays State Tigers 3-2 (19-25, 21-25, 28-26, 25-19 and 15-7). Kelli Sicner led the Griffons as she had a career high 21 kills and nine digs in the match. With the loss the Griffons fall to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in the MIAA.

9/15/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL OPENS MIAA CONFERENCE PLAY -

The Missouri Western Volleyball team will open its conference portion of the 2009 season this week with three different competitions.  The Griffons host Fort Hays at home on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 7 p.m.  The other two contests are road match-ups with Emporia State on Friday, September 18 at 7 p.m. and against the Lady Blues of Washburn on Saturday, September 19 at 2 p.m.

9/12/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL FALLS TWICE ON FINAL DAY OF RU CLASSIC - KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffons volleyball team fell twice on the final day of the Rockhurst University Classic. The Griffons went 2-2 on the weekend and now sit at 7-5 on the season. The Griffons fell in the opener on Saturday losing to the Wayne State Wildcats 3-0 (25-9, 25-19 and 25-19) and then fell to Upper Iowa University 3-1 (21-25, 32-30, 25-14 and 25-22). Western junior outside hitter Kelli Sicner was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts over the weekend.

9/11/2009 - WESTERN VOLLEYBALL IMPROVES TO 7-3 WITH VICTORY OVER MIDWESTERN STATE - KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Western Griffon volleyball team used a comeback victory against Midwestern State winning 3-2 (16-25, 25-20, 25-14, 25-23 and 15-8) to make it their sixth victory in a row. 8/10/2009 - GRIFFON VOLLEYBALL OPENS UP FALL PRACTICE - ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western volleyball team opened up their 2009 preseason on Monday, August 10 as new head coach Cory Frederick held his first practice. The Griffons return a plethora of players from a year ago. Western will open up its season on August 28 in Sioux Falls, S.D. when they participate in the Augustana Tournament. The Griffons will take on Southwest Minnesota State University at 9:00 am and Regis University at 3:00 pm.

JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western head volleyball coach Cory Frederick has tabbed former Griffon player Marian “Broderick” Carbin as the team’s assistant coach, announced Monday (June 15). Carbin will assist in all aspects of the program under Frederick, including recruiting.
