Griffon quarterbacks Drew Newhart and Travis Partridge took a break from off season workouts and spread an important message to 3rd thru 8th grade students Friday afternoon at Stewartsville Elementary and Middle School. The student-athletes were guests at an assembly as part of the schools kickoff of the National Football League's NFL Fuel Up to Play 60 Program.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team finished 22nd in the final D2Football.com media poll which was released Monday, January 25. Cedric Houston (Sr. WR., Kissimmee, Fla.) was also recognized by D2Football.com as he was named to the Honorable Mention All-America Team which was also released on Monday, January 25.

1/9/2010 - FOUR GRIFFON FOOTBALL PLAYERS EARN ALL-SUPER REGION FOUR TEAM HONORS -
PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Missouri Western football team was well represented on the 2009 Football Gazette All-Super Region Four Team announced Friday, January 8. Nathan Martin landed on the first team, Todd Shelton and Cedric Houston landed on the second team while Sean Whiters was on the third team.

KINGSVILLE, TEXAS – The West All-Stars put together a superlative defensive effort in shutting out the East All-Stars, 16-0 at the 16th Valero Cactus Bowl on Friday night at Javelina Stadium. Griffon senior center Nathan Martin played on the winning side west squad.

12/5/2009 - GRIFFONS PICK UP 34-21 VICTORY OVER VIKINGS IN 44TH MINERAL WATER BOWL -
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team revenged last year’s 37-16 Mineral Water Bowl loss to the Augustana College by defeating the Vikings 34-21 in this years bowl game held in Excelsior Springs, Mo. With the victory the Griffons improve to 5-2 all-time in Mineral Water Bowl games. Western finished the season with a 9-3 overall record. The Griffons have won a team record nine games in five of the last seven seasons.

12/2/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL SET TO PLAY IN FIFTH CONSECUTIVE POST-SEASON CONTEST -
The Missouri Western football team will be playing in the fifth consecutive post-season contest on Saturday, December 2 when they take on the Augustana College Vikings in the 44th Mineral Water Bowl. The game will be played in Excelsior Springs, Mo. at Tiger Stadium at 12:00 pm. The Griffons sit at 5-2 in Mineral Water Bowl games and will be looking to revenge a 37-16 loss last season against the Vikings on December 6, 2008. Both teams hold an 8-3 overall record.

11/24/2009 - JONES NAMED TO SECOND TEAM CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FOOTBALL TEAM -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western junior offensive lineman, Steven Jones (Palmyra, Mo.) was named to the CoSida Academic All-America Second Team which was voted on by the nations Sports Information Directors and released Tuesday, November 24. Jones was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 First Team back on November 5.

11/24/2009 - TWO GRIFFONS EARN 2009 ALL-SUPER REGION 4 SECOND TEAM HONORS -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western senior offensive lineman Nathan Martin (Wentzville, Mo.) and senior wide receiver Cedric Houston (Kissimmee, Fla.) have been named to the 2009 All-Super Region 4 Second Team as voted on by the regions SID’s (Sports Information Directors) and announced by the regional chair, Tuesday, November 24. This marks the first time that Martin and Houston have received this honor. Martin was also named to the All-MIAA first team as an offensive lineman while Houston garnered All-MIAA first team honors as a wide receiver and All-MIAA second team as a kickoff/punt return specialist.

11/10/2009 - THIRTEEN GRIFFONS RECEIVE MIAA HONORS; TWO EARN FIRST TEAM SELECTIONS -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team was well represented in the 2009 MIAA All-Conference teams as thirteen Griffon football players have been named to the All-MIAA football team as voted on by the league’s head coaches and announced by the MIAA office, Tuesday, November 10. The Griffons landed two players on the first team, while three additional players were named to the second team.

11/10/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL PLAYERS VOLUNTEER AT LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western football team spent the last eight weeks volunteering at Coleman, Hyde and Hall elementary schools in various areas. The Griffons started the mentoring program on Monday, September 14 and wrapped up this past week on Monday, November 9. The players went to Coleman and Hall from 12-1 every Monday. At Hall, they spent time with the kids on the playground during their lunch hour while they mentored the kid’s one on one at Coleman. A group of players went to Hyde from 2-3 helping students with their math and reading assignments.

11/7/2009 - GRIFFONS FALL 30-21 TO MAVERICKS ON SENIOR DAY -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team was held scoreless in the second half as they would fall 30-21 to the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Senior Day. Shane Simpson and Matt Glades had career highs with 11 and 10 tackles respectively as the Griffons end their regular season 8-3 overall and 6-3 in MIAA play.

11/6/2009 - NEWHART NAMED HARLON HILL CANDIDATE -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Griffon quarterback Drew Newhart has made the preliminary round of 24 candidates in the running for the Harlon Hill Trophy. The award is given out annually to the top NCAA Division II College Football Player of the Year, with the first award being given in 1986. Since then, the MIAA has seen four players receive the award, including Ronnie West (’91) and Ronald Moore (’92) of Pittsburg State, Jarrett Anderson (’96) of Truman State and Emporia State running back Brian Shay (’98).

11/5/2009 - TWO GRIFFON FOOTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Missouri Western football players Steven Jones (Palmyra, Mo.) and Kip Peters (Highland, Kan.) were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 Teams as voted on by the districts Sports Information Directors. Jones was named to the first team while Peters was named to the second. Both players have helped the Griffons high powered offense average 39.6 points per contest which is second in the MIAA and ninth in the nation.

11/3/2009 - GRIFFONS HOST MAVERICKS ON SENIOR DAY FROM SPRATT STADIUM -
The Missouri Western Griffon football team will be at home for their final regular season game of 2009 when they take on the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks on Saturday, November 7. The Griffons (8-2, 6-2 MIAA) will recognize 10 senior student-athletes before the game as they will play their last regular season home game in Spratt Stadium. The two teams have only played once with the Mavericks (6-4, 5-3 MIAA) defeating the Griffons 42-14 last season in Omaha, Neb. on October 11, 2008. Kickoff is set for 1:30 pm in St. Joseph, Mo.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri Western junior kicker Brad Beckwith (Cameron, Mo.) has been named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Missouri Western’s 29-6 victory over Emporia State University. The Griffons are ranked 21st in the country and will take on the Mavericks of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday, November 7 at 1:30 pm from Spratt Stadium on Senior Day.

11/2/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL MOVES UP TO 21ST IN AFCA POLL; 5th IN SUPER REGIONAL FOUR -
WACO, Texas – For the seventh straight week the Missouri Western football team cracks the AFCA top-25 coming in this week at No. 21 after defeating Emporia State University 29-6 in Emporia, Kan. on Saturday, October 31. The highest the Griffons have been ranked in the AFCA poll was on November 7, 2006 when they were ranked 11th. Western also remains in the top six in the Super Regional Four poll as they fell to 5th behind Central Washington, Northwest Missouri State, Tarleton State and Abilene Christian. The top six teams in the region will earn a playoff spot with the first round being on Saturday, November 14 with the third seed playing the sixth seed and four seed playing the five seed. The top two teams in each region will earn a first round bye.

10/31/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL DOMINATES HORNETS IN 29-6 VICTORY -
EMPORIA, Kan. – The Missouri Western defense had one of their best performances of the season holding the Emporia State Hornets to just 207 yards (120 rushing, 87 passing) of total offense in a 29-6 victory. Brad Beckwith had an outstanding day kicking the ball in front of 3,895 fans on homecoming and Halloween Saturday making a career high three field goals (35, 41 and 18). Western has now won five straight over the Hornets improving to 8-2 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play.

10/28/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL HITS THE ROAD FOR FINAL TIME IN 2009 REGULAR SEASON -
The 23rd ranked Missouri Western Griffon football team will hit the road for the last time during the 2009 regular season on Saturday, October 31. The Griffons will be in Emporia, Kan. to take on the Emporia State Hornets with kickoff set from 1:00 pm from Jones Field at Welch Stadium on Homecoming and Halloween weekend. Last weekend the Griffons fell to the Missouri Southern Lions 35-34 in St. Joseph, Mo. The Hornets are coming off of a 30-24 overtime victory against the Truman State Bulldogs in Kirksville, Mo. Missouri Western leads the all-time series 20-11 and has won four straight following a three game ESU winning streak. Six of the last eight games have been decided by a touchdown or less.

10/24/2009 - GRIFFONS LOSE HEARTBREAKER 35-34 TO LIONS -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team gave up 21 unanswered fourth quarter points falling to the Missouri Southern Lions, 35-34. This marked the first loss for the Griffons against the Lions since September 25, 2004 when they lost 23-21 in Joplin, Mo. Western was able to pile up 518 yards of total offense with Michael Hill leading the way rushing for a career high 143 yards on 28 carries. Western falls to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA.

10/20/2009 - No. 12 GRIFFONS HOST LIONS ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24 -
The 12th ranked Missouri Western Griffon football team welcomes the Lions of Missouri Southern to Spratt Stadium for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, October 24. After running past the Central Missouri Mules last weekend, 36-21, the Griffons are now 7-1 on the year and 5-1 in the MIAA. The Griffons sit No. 3 in the Super Regional 4 Poll and 12th in the D2football.com poll. The Lions come into this game looking to finish their season on a high note, as they sit at 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the MIAA. Last week the Lions defeated the Truman State Bulldogs 20-16 n Joplin, Mo. Missouri Southern Head Coach Bart Tatum is in his fourth year and is looking for his first victory over the Griffons, while Coach Jerry Partridge is looking to make it double digits in his win column vs. the Lions. The Lions lead the overall series with the Griffons 20-19, but Western has won the last four contests.

WACO, Texas – After defeating their third ranked opponent in five weeks the Missouri Western Griffon football team was rewarded by moving up three spots to 12th in the latest American Football Coaches’ Association Division II Poll. The Griffons also moved up one spot in the Super Regional Four Poll to third, both of which were released Monday (Oct. 19) afternoon. This marks the fifth straight week that the Griffons have been in the AFCA poll and ties for highest ranking of the season as they were also 12th on September 28. The highest the Griffons have been ranked in the AFCA poll was on November 7, 2006 when they were ranked 11th.

10/17/2009 - #15 WESTERN RUNS PAST #14 CENTRAL MISSOURI 36-21 ON HOMECOMING -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Western rushed for 223 yards on 49 carriers as they ran past the 14th ranked University of Central Missouri Mules 36-21 on Homecoming. Thomas Hodges rushed for 117 yards on 27 carries while Michael Hill rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries giving the Griffons their seventh consecutive victory over Central Missouri. Western now leads the series 13-12-1 and sit at 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the MIAA.

10/14/2009 - GRIFFONS SET FOR HOMECOMING MATCH-UP WITH MULES -
The #15 Missouri Western Griffon football team will try and continue their 6 game winning streak in the series against the #14 Central Missouri Mules. Both teams are currently 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the MIAA. Western is coming off a victory last week at Truman State (spoiling their homecoming) by a score of 38-14, while the Mules are coming off a victory at home vs. Fort Hays State, 48-3 which was their Homecoming game. Western used three touchdown runs, a touchdown pass, and a 62 yard punt return as they leaped out in front of the Bulldogs for a 35-0 lead through the 3rd quarter. The Griffons continued to rack up the offensive numbers, as Newhart had 209 yards passing and Thomas Hodges and Michael Hill led the running game (209 yards total). On the defensive side of the ball, the Griffons held the Bulldogs to -9 yards through the first half, and finished the game with 199. The series is tied at 12-12-1 with the Griffons winning the last six games.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri Western senior wide receiver Cedric Houston (Kissimmee, Fla.) has been named the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Truman State University. This marks the fourth consecutive week that the Griffons have been ranked with their highest ranking of the season being 12th back on Monday, September 28th. 10/10/2009 - DEFENSE LEADS GRIFFONS TO 38-14 VICTORY OVER BULLDOGS -
KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri Western defense sacked the Truman State quarterback five times and forced two turnovers in a 38-14 victory over the Bulldogs in Kirksville, Mo. The Griffon offense accumulated more than 400 yards of total offense for the fourth time this season with 418 today. Western improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play.

The Griffons will look to get back on track this weekend when they take on the Truman State Bulldogs on Homecoming in Kirksville, Mo. Western will be looking for its sixth victory of the season and to remain undefeated on the road (3-0). The Griffons are coming off of a 49-35 loss to the 6th ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats in a game where the Griffons turned the ball over seven times. The Bulldogs are searching for their first MIAA win of the season as they sit at 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 38-3 loss to the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo.

10/5/2009 - GRIFFONS REMAIN IN AFCA TOP 25; 4TH IN FIRST REGIONAL POLL -
WACO, Texas – Even though they could not hold onto the ball in a 49-35 loss to Northwest Missouri State, the Missouri Western State University Griffon football team remains in the AFCA Top 25 this week, falling to a tie with Central Missouri at number 16. The MIAA would also add Northwest Missouri State University (No. 6), and Washburn University (No. 12) to the top 25 giving them four teams in the rankings. The Griffons also made it into the first round of regional rankings this week, coming in at number four. After impressive victories over Washburn (37-34 on a last second field goal), and Pittsburg State (45-40 on the Gorilla’s home field), the stage was set for the Griffons to take on the number 6 ranked Bearcats on their home turf.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western had seven turnovers falling for the sixth straight time too the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats by a score of 49-35. The Griffons fell to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the MIAA, in front of a record crowd of 10,129 at Spratt Stadium. The previous record of 9,007 was set on September 15, 2007 against Northwest Missouri State.

9/28/2009 - GRIFFONS MOVE UP SIX SPOTS IN LATEST AFCA POLL -
WACO, Texas – After a dramatic 45-40 victory last weekend against #23 Pittsburg State the Missouri Western Griffon football team moved up six spots to 12th in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll which was released Monday, September 28. This is the highest the Griffons have been ranked since the 2006 season when they were ranked 11th on November 7, 2006.

9/26/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL REMAINS UNDEFEATED WITH 45-40 VICTORY OVER #23 PITT STATE -

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Missouri Western remained undefeated on the season by defeating #23 Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan. by a score of 45-40. Western has defeated the Gorillas three out of the last four years with two of those victories coming in “The Pitt (2007).” Drew Newhart had four touchdowns (1 rush) with three touchdown passes to receiver Cedric Houston. Western improves to 3-0 in MIAA play for the first time since 2000 and to 5-0 overall for the first time since 1981 when they started 7-0.

9/23/2009 - PITTSBURG STATE FOOTBALLTICKET UPDATE -
As of 4:30 PM this afternoon, all of the ticket allotment in the visiting section for the Griffon Football game at Pittsburg State this weekend has been sold. Sixteen spots still remain on the fan bus headed to the game (which does include a game ticket in the section). The bus, which is organized by the Griffon Football 1st & 10 club and Midwest Federal Savings is $25 per person and includes round trip transportation, a tailgate lunch and a game ticket. To reserve your spot, call the athletics department at 816-271-4481.

9/23/2009 - FOOTBALL TAILGATE INFORMATION -
Pittsburg State University has issued Missouri Western the Grubbs Hall Parking lot which is on the Northside of campus for Saturday's tailgate. The lot is betweeen Elm Street and Joplin Street two blocks from the stadium. To get there follow Highway 69 thourgh town to the 2nd McDonalds. Take a left on Quincy Street and follow to Joplin Street and take a right. Look for the black and gold Prize Patrol along with people you know. The tailgate will start between 10 and 10:30 am. The lot we have is colored gold on the picture.

9/23/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL SET FOR TOP-25 SHOWDOWN -
The Missouri Western Griffons entered the AFCA top-25 for the first time in 2009 debuting at No. 18 in this weeks poll. The Griffons will face their second ranked team in as many weeks when they travel to Pittsburg, Kan. to take on the No. 23 Gorillas on Saturday, September 26. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm. The Griffons are 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the MIAA while the Gorillas are 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.

9/21/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL ENTERS AFCA TOP 25 -
WACO, Texas - Missouri Western football garnered the No. 18 ranking in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. It’s the first time the Griffons have been ranked in the top 25 of the AFCA poll since September 25, 2007 when they were ranked 24th. The Griffons had received votes in the AFCA’s first three regular season polls as well as the preseason poll this year.

9/19/2009 - RECORD FIELD GOAL LIFTS GRIFFONS PAST #22 ICHABODS, 37-34 -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Missouri Western junior place kicker Brad Beckwith nailed a school record 53 yard field goal as time expired to lift the Griffons to a 37-34 victory over the 22nd ranked Washburn Ichabods. The 53 yard field goal broke the previous record of 52 yards by Michael Sierra against Northwest Missouri State University in 1996. With the victory the Griffons snap a three game losing streak against the Ichabods and move to 4-0, 2-0 MIAA under head coach Jerry Partridge for first time in his career.

9/16/2009 - GRIFFONS TAKE ON #22 ICHABODS ON HALL OF FAME WEEKEND -
Missouri Western will continue MIAA play this weekend against #22 Washburn University. Both the Griffons and the Ichabods are off to 3-0, 1-0 MIAA starts. The Griffons are coming off a 58-31 victory over the Fort Hays State Tigers while the Ichabods defeated Missouri Southern 54-31 on Saturday, September 12. The Missouri Western offense is on a roll averaging 47.3 points per match up which is second in the MIAA just behind the Washburn Ichabods who are averaging 54.3 points per contest which is first in the nation. The Griffons are off to a 3-0 start for the first time since the 2006 season. Western is looking to start 4-0 under coach Partridge for the first in his career. The Griffons went 4-0-1 to start the 1995 season under head coach Stan McGarvey. The Griffons are ranked for the first time since September 25, 2007. Last time the Griffons were ranked they lost 21-17 to the Ichabods on September 29, 2007 in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Missouri Western football team has cracked the D2Football.com top 25 poll coming in at No. 24. It’s the first time the Griffons have been ranked in the top 25 since September 25, 2007 when they were ranked 20th in the nation by D2Football.com. The Griffons have received votes in the AFCA’s first three regular season polls as well as the preseason poll this year.

9/12/2009 - BIG SECOND HALF LIFTS GRIFFONS PAST TIGERS, 58-31 -
HAYS, Kan. – The Missouri Western Griffons outscored the Fort Hays State University Tigers 31-7 in the second half earning a 58-31 victory moving their record to 3-0, 1-0 MIAA. The Griffons held the Tigers to just 10 points after the first quarter giving up only 31 rushing yards in the contest. Thomas Hodges ran for 97 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns. Fort Hays falls to 2-1 on the year and 0-1 in the MIAA.

8/17/2009 - FIVE GRIFFONS NAMED TO 2009 D2Football.com All-MIAA PRESEASON TEAM -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western football team had five players named to the 2009 D2Football.com All-MIAA Preseason Team. On the offensive side of the ball junior running back Thomas Hodges (Raymore, Mo.), senior wide receivers Cedric Houston (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Andrew Mead (Gower, Mo.) and senior offensive lineman Nathan Martin (Wentzville, Mo.) were all named to the squad. On the defensive side senior defensive end Brad Davidson (St. Charles, Mo.) was named to the team.

Null isn't the only Division II product trying to make the team. Offensive guard Roger Allen III was a two-time All-American at that level for Missouri Western State. He got an invitation to the NFL scouting combine in February. But an injury in the Texas vs. the Nation all-star game prevented him from working out at the combine.

8/13/2009 - GRIFFONS INTO FIRST WEEK OF TWO A DAY PRACTICES -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffons football team is well into their first week of two a day practices. After a five day acclimation period the Griffons had their first two practice day on Tuesday, August 11. Because of NCAA rules the Griffons could only practice once on Wednesday, August 12, but could then have another two practice day on Thursday, August 13. The team will trade off practice schedules the rest of the preseason having Sunday's off. Western will open up play on Thursday, August 27 against Northern State University at 6:00 pm from Spratt Stadium. The Griffons defeated the Wolves last season in Aberdeen, S.D. by a score of 38-27.

8/6/2009 - GRIFFON FOOTBALL HOLDS FIRST PRACTICE OF 2009 FALL SEASON -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffon football team held its first practice of the fall season on the evening of Thursday, August 6. Western brought in 105 players this season and will look to improve on their 6-6 record from a season ago. The Griffons will open up the season on Thursday, August 27 against Northern State University at 6:00 pm from Spratt Memorial Stadium.

JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western Griffon Golf Classic which was held on Saturday, July 18 was a great success as there were 28 teams which participated in the four person scramble at Fairview Golf Course in St. Joseph, Mo. The event included hole and door prizes along with a Social at Uncle D's Sports Bar after the tournament.

6/25/2009 - THROCKMORTON HIRED AS TIGHT ENDS COACH -
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Todd Trockmorton returns for his third stint at Missouri Western as he has been hired on as the new tight ends coach replacing Mike McFarland. Throckmorton spent the past three seasons at the University of New Mexico as the Lobo’s tight end coach.

Missouri Western State University had two former Griffon student-athletes receive the 2009 Division II Degree- Completion Award. Former football player Lance Neal (Warrensburg, Mo.) and former baseball player Brady Ellis (Stockton, Mo.) will both receive the award for the upcoming academic year.
